This month, we speak to Real estate consultant, Susan Henning.
Where did you start your legal career
Having completed a law degree at Leeds, followed by Solicitors’ finals in London, I started as a trainee (or articled clerk as we were known in the mid ‘80s) in a small busy west end firm just off Oxford St. My fellow trainee was none other than our very own Karen Mason which heralded the start of an amazing friendship!
From there, I decided to challenge myself by moving, as a newly qualified solicitor, to work in a large City firm in their commercial property department. Quite scary but I soon got completely immersed in high value, intensely busy, commercial property and corporate led work for the next few years!
I then become a PDL for another city firm, and with two small children by then, I was able to work on a part time basis!
What are some challenging aspects of your role?
I think for me, it’s not the legal aspects that are the most challenging but more the IT and getting to grips with that! In my previous working life, I was so used to having IT support, on tap, in the same building, plus my own secretary and the department’s word processing dept to support me. On the upside however, I do now have very understanding colleagues and two Gen Z daughters who can help me to master that side of working life!
What attracted you to the firm?
The chance to work alongside Karen was very appealing and I joined Newmanor in 2021. I do enjoy the collaborative nature of the firm and all the personalities involved. Last year I became the firm’s marketing person, and I enjoy organising events, preparing our monthly newsletter and liaising with our PR firm. I hope to continue with that side of things along with supporting Karen on the legal side.
What is the best part of your day?
I’m an early riser so I like to get started with a quick coffee and check emails before our first Teams call at 9.30! Working from home does have benefits when all the IT is working perfectly!
How do you switch off?
I have a lively labradoodle who is always keen to play so he does keep me busy. I enjoy family time with my two girls and their friends. Also, I just joined a new gym with pool so am full of good intentions. I am also aiming to get back into yoga,
